Water allocation and well permits.
A new well, an increase in production, or a change in water use can affect the approvals behind a facility’s supply. We review the sources and existing approvals, prepare water allocation and registration filings, coordinate well permitting with the licensed driller, and keep the reporting connected to the water the facility actually uses.

Services
Water use and approval review
Existing permits, registrations, well records, pumping capacity, and actual use brought together to identify the approvals and reporting that apply to the project.
Allocation permits and registrations
Application preparation and coordination for a new source, a renewal, or a change in authorized use, with the supporting facility information organized for review.
Well permit coordination
Project information and existing records assembled with the facility and its New Jersey licensed well driller, who submits the well permit application. We track how the well work connects to the site’s other environmental approvals.
Expansion and source changes
Review of the water supply implications before a new production line, replacement well, or additional source is committed to a project schedule.
Water use reporting
Meter readings, pumping records, and required reports organized around the applicable approval and reporting schedule, with discrepancies identified before filing.
Agency correspondence
Information requests, application questions, and follow-up documentation coordinated so the facility has a clear record of what was submitted and what remains open.
Applicability
This service is for facilities that withdraw groundwater or surface water, maintain their own wells, or plan to add or change a water source. Industrial processing, cooling, irrigation, and other site uses can bring different approval requirements.
The required pathway depends on the source, purpose, pumping capacity, quantity used, duration, and location. A water allocation approval addresses the diversion and use of water; a well permit addresses the well itself. We review both alongside the existing site approvals and any additional agency requirements.
Typical situations
- A production expansion will increase water demand beyond the assumptions in the current approval
- A replacement or additional well is planned, and the project needs a clear permitting sequence
- Pumping records, well records, and the allocation file describe different versions of the facility
- A renewal or water use report is due, and the supporting records are scattered
- NJDEP has requested more information about a source, application, or reported water use
FAQ
Is a water allocation permit the same as a well permit?
No. Water allocation approvals address the diversion and use of groundwater or surface water. A well permit concerns construction and installation of the well. Depending on the project, both pathways may need attention.
Who submits the well permit application?
New Jersey licensed well drillers submit well permit applications to NJDEP. We coordinate the environmental information, existing approvals, and project requirements with the facility and its driller.
Does adding a well mean we can use more water?
Do not assume that a new or replacement well increases the quantity authorized for the facility. We review the existing allocation or registration and the proposed use to identify whether a separate change is needed.
What should we provide to get started?
Existing permits and registrations, well records, recent water use reports, meter or pumping records, and a description of the proposed change. If the file is incomplete, start with what you have and the project’s next deadline.
Planning a new well or a change in water use?
Tell us about the source, the current approval, and what the facility is planning. We’ll help put the filings and supporting information in order.
