The firm was founded in 1973 by Tibor Somers Sr., a chemical engineer with a career in designing industrial processes. When the Clean Water Act passed, that experience turned to designing the treatment facilities the law now required — which is the “Design” in Somers Design Co. Within a few years the firm was permitting, operating, and sampling the systems it designed, and fifty years on, that is still the work.

Every facility is different. Each engagement starts with a thorough look at the permit, the site, and the deadline; then we tell you what it will take. We would rather define the scope correctly than sell a service you don’t need. When something has gone wrong, we tell you where you stand and what to do first.

Somers Design Co. is led by the second and third generations of the Somers family. The team includes a licensed Professional Engineer, NJDEP-licensed Class N industrial wastewater and VSWS drinking water operators, and laboratory and field staff. Staffing scales to the engagement, and we draw on accredited partner laboratories and specialists when a project calls for them.

Most environmental work in the region is built around large municipal plants or large corporate programs. Ours has always been the other kind — industrial systems attached to a production process, and the small water systems that serve campgrounds, communities, farms, and small towns. That is the experience we bring to permits, operations, and troubleshooting.
